Early Childhood

Pre-Referral Process:   

            A parent or a caregiver may request an evaluation of their child if they suspect a delay in any area of development. Ripley-Ohio-Dearborn Special Education Cooperative provides services to eligible children in the area of early childhood from ages 3-5.  In addition, Ripley-Ohio-Dearborn Special Education Cooperative works closely with other early childhood agencies such as First Steps to obtain referrals for children who may qualify for services. On an annual basis, Ripley-Ohio-Dearborn Special Education Cooperative conducts childfind activities to make the public aware of the services available to children ages 3-5 who are eligible. 

Referral Process and Services:             

            The parent or caregiver makes a request for an evaluation. When a request is received a packet of information is sent to the parent/caregiver. The parent/caregiver completes the referral and returns it to our office. Within 60 instructional days or by the 3rd birthday, Ripley-Ohio-Dearborn Special Education Cooperative will conduct the evaluation, hold a case conference to determine eligibility for services, and place the eligible child in the most appropriate program /placement as determined by the case conference committee. A full continuum of services is offered to early childhood students which range from consultative services to participation in a daily preschool classroom setting. Most children are serviced in their home corporations. However, some are offered programs outside of the home corporation. These decisions are determined by the case conference committee and are reflected in the child’s individualized education plan. As needed, additional services are provided in the areas of speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, behavior management, or counseling. The early childhood program is activity-based and focuses on the strengths of the child. Emphasis is placed on language development, communication, and socialization.
